For some people, catching a plane at Asheville Airport or the Tri-Cities airport may be a good idea, especially if you are traveling to or from Banner Elk, Beech Mountain, Newland or most anywhere in Avery County. Those airports are closer to Avery County and a shorter distance to travel to get there.
The DownSide
Compared to Charlotte Airport (CLT), your flight options are more limited at AVL or TRI. Prices vary as well, some are cheaper, some are more expensive.
Busses and scheduled shuttles. Unlike Charlotte, there is no Hickory Hop. There is a Greyhound/Sunway bus service that goes to downtown Asheville, and then you can take another bus to the airport.
There is no bus service from the High Country to TRI.
DON'T plan on renting a car from Enterprise in Boone. Neighborhood rental locations (unlike airport hubs) rely on local fleet inventory and rarely have extra cars to spare for drop-offs in another state—even if the system lets you book it online.
Reserve a private car service, easily the most convenient way to get to and from an airport. Private car services are based in Ashe, Watauga and Avery Counties.. Prices vary by company. Calling ahead to make reservations assures getting to the airport on time. Check reviews at YELP and Google Reviews. Search the internet, even AI, like Chat GPT can help you. Facebook, Reddit and even NextDoor online media may provide recommendations.
