Winding Down...

This year, I’ve taken fewer weddings than ever—not because of a lack of demand, but because my personal life has changed.

For one thing, the love of my life and I acquired a camper on the shores of Watauga Lake. Since I’m supposed to be retired, and she is working toward retirement, weekends have become the perfect time to head to the lake, spend time with friends, and enjoy our grandchildren.

Most weddings take place on weekends. And let’s be honest—if you had the chance to escape to a little piece of heaven on weekends, wouldn’t you? I would. When I choose to officiate a wedding, I’m not only offering my time and expertise, but also giving up an activity that brings me deep joy.

So much for retirement. A couple of years ago, I started another business: providing airport shuttle service to and from the High Country. I can run this during the week and on weekends, year‑round—and as you can imagine, it keeps me busy.

Finally, I’ve learned that my lower back pain isn’t just weak core muscles, but severe spinal stenosis. Standing through a ceremony—and even the time before, visiting with the wedding party and guests—has become increasingly painful.

I’m scheduled for surgery in January 2026. Hopefully, recovery will be swift, and I can focus on getting back in shape.

I will continue officiating heartfelt custom weddings, but with a new focus: shorter ceremonies, smaller crowds, weekday events, and those held in late fall, winter, or early spring.
